«Polar Lights»

Bronze, brass, height 60 cm, 2023

Since ancient times, people have identified natural phenomena with images they could understand. Sometimes these were images of animals or birds, but more often, they attributed anthropomorphic traits to natural phenomena.

In this work, the night in the North is depicted: cold, with brightly shining stars from the frosty freshness of the air. A night with polar lights is a spectacle that takes the breath away of anyone who sees it with their own eyes.

I portrayed the polar lights as a diagonal portrait of a sleeping man with elongated facial features. The combination of the polished brass surface contrasts with the texture of the man's face, which is made of bronze. The composition is complemented by a pedestal where smooth, polished surfaces are combined with soft, shiny bronze inserts. On the smooth, patinated surface, the facial features are barely visible, just as people throughout time have tried to find recognizable silhouettes in the contours of clouds, the outlines of distant mountains, and the glow of stars.
